Tucker,
I guess I should have used some of the "smiley" icons! LOL! Not knowing where you are from, I was serious about the possiblity of you lossing something is the translation between lapping compound and a "bonding agent". You are the one who has taken my comments wrong and you need to relax. I'm sorry for getting you upset. I was simply making sure you knew what a lapping compound does.
Andrew has also made a very valid point with your finding a prop. Major improvements have been made to modern props that are now CNC machine. Dollar for dollar, it's the best money spent for upgrading performance.
I was going to mention it eariler but held off. As Andrew said, I get "carried away" with my lectures and tried not to do that! LOL |

Gentlemen, thank you for your assistance with the prop issue. Consulted with Richard at skidim and ended up getting an ACME #540, 13 x 12 (.080c) 3 BLD, 1" Bore, RH w/ a castle nut, key and cotter pin (Nylock out of stock but will be sent to replace castle when in stock) Should be out on the lake Friday night. Live and learn. Again thanks. |

The 540 sounds like will be a nice improvement. I did have some vibration with the other prop but I'm guessing that may have been because it wasn't seated properly on the shaft. Bought lapping compound yesterday so I'll be ready to install Friday after work. I really don't want this to happen again.
Andrew & 8122pbrainard, thanks for the help and I apologize for the sharp response the other day. I will be bring other issues to the forum in the future: speedos aren't working, gas gauge is far from accurate, clock isn't working and thinking for rewiring the boat. Have enjoyed this boat and want to keep it running and looking great for another 28 years.
How do I post a picture? Would like to add a picture of my 82. |

Host the picture on a site like www.photobucket.com , then paste the link here with the tags: [img]-[/img.] (without the period at the end)
As for that vibration, you might want to check the alignment between the shaft and transmission. |

Tucker,
The first thing you want to check on the speedos is to make sure the pitot pickups and the tubing is clear all the way up to the actual gauges. Understand that the gauges are actual pressure gauges. As the boat moves through the water, pressure is created by the moving water past the pitot pickup. This in turn creates air pressure at the gauge. IF, you have any leaks in the system, pressure is lost. I'd start with replacing all of the tubing. It's not expensive. Then while running the boat see if water is coming out at the gauge as well as from the dampners mounted on the inside of the transom. These are copper tubes that equalize any pressure irregularities. If they ever had water in them during a winter storage, they will freeze and crack. They can be solder repaired. If you get water all the way up to the gauge itself, then internally there is a problem. Inside there is a stainless steel bellows that converts the air pressure into a linear movement to a rack and pinion gear that turns the indicating needle. The bellows sometimes cracks. This too can be repaired by silver soldering the crack in the bellows. If you don't want to do this yorself, and it is confirmed to be a problem, take it into a jeweler. They are experts in silver soldering.
Regarding your gas gauge, most likely it's a tank sender problem. However first make sure you have the nominal 12 volts at the backside of the gauge and you have a good ground continuity between the gas tank and the engine block. |

| I didn't think the prop would make such difference. Wow, it is a HUGH improvement. The 540 gets the boat up and planed out in a heart beat and seems to have added some speed. (can't confirm that because speedos aren't working) It has even eliminated some vibration. But, I now have another vibration that has appeared. When I am steer to the right everything is smooth as silk but when I turn left a vibration appears. This is around 3000 RPM. If I increase the RPM to 3200 or more the left turn vibration seems to go away or at least not as noticeable. I have asked some local friends who have owned SN for the past 30 years or and they aren't too concerned. What do ya'll think about it? Is it still a possible misalignment between the transmission and shaft? |

| I think the vibration is normal. With the change in prop pitch, I would expect some vibration differences than with the stock prop. |
